Armenia? Why Armenia?
Our “Resident Armenian”, Gabriel Haigazian, will be leading a WOW! Travel Club trip to his homeland (Armenia) May 10-23, 2020. Gabriel recently hosted a webinar all about Armenia. If this magical destination wasn’t on your bucket list before, it will be now!

Here is what Jill Stoliker, one of our most well-traveled WOWee’s, had to say about her Armenian experience:
“Armenia was the most Spiritual trip I have ever taken. I am not talking about religion, although that is certainly available. I am talking about a deep resonance with nature, antiquity and the inner spirit that animates all life.
The modern Armenian people I met shared their home-grown vegetables, handmade bread, wine, music, folk dancing, art, crafts and stories, in addition to their genuine hospitality and joy.
I will add that all this has come at a great personal and national cost to these strong, resilient people originating from a stone-age settlement to today’s modern capital, Yerevan (the rose-colored city), which is the pride of all Armenians.”
1. Explore The First Christian Country In The world
Armenia was the first country in the world that adopted Christianity as a state religion. It happened in 301 AD. Etchmiadzin Cathedral, is known as the first Christian cathedral in the world. We’ll be visiting this magnificent site on Day Two of our Armenian journey! Also included in our travels – a visit to the mysterious Monastery of Geghard, half-carved in the rock and over 800 years old, as well as the Monastery of Tatev, a pearl of medieval Armenian architecture.
2. Enjoy the view of Mount Ararat
It’s impossible to visit the capital of Armenia, Yerevan, without noticing its magnificent natural landmark, Mount Ararat. Mount Ararat is the symbol of the motherland for Armenians. It is known as a Biblical mount as it is believed that Noah’s ark stopped exactly on the mount and later Noah and his family settled in the Ararat Valley. We’ll be visiting numerous sites with excellent views of this natural wonder- where you will feel like you can almost touch the mountain!
3. Take The Longest Double Track Cable Car In The World
We’ll be visiting one of the most magnificent creations of medieval Armenian architecture, Tatev Monastery, by a double track cable car, which happens to be the longest in the world (5,752 meters). It provides spectacular views of the Vorotan Gorge and surrounding breathtaking landscapes.
4. Take A Dip In the “Inverted Sky”
Lake Sevan is located so high up in the mountains, that when you sit on the bank it seems that the water surface is about to touch the sky. This amazing lake is the largest and possibly the most beautiful in the Caucasus. The lake, which locals call ‘the Armenian Sea,’ is surrounded by majestic mountains. Not only will we be visiting the lake, but we’ll be enjoying a cooking class in which we’ll learn to prepare a big Armenian BBQ lunch!
5. Taste The Most Ancient Cuisine In The South Caucasus
Armenian cuisine is one of the oldest in Europe and the oldest in the South Caucasus. The dishes here are diverse and delicious thanks to the use of lots of spices, herbs, and wild flowers. We’ll learn how to make Lavash using traditional Armenian techniques!
6. Enjoy The Great Variety Of Fruits And Vegetables
Due to the favorable climate and the warm rays of the sun, the Armenian land provides a huge amount of juicy fruits and healthy vegetables for its residents. Every year in the summer and autumn the shop shelves are crammed with a variety of fruits, berries, and vegetables. We’ll, of course, spend time in the local markets sampling the local treats.
7. Buy A Beautiful Carpet
Many historians consider the Armenian Highlands as the birthplace of the eastern carpet. The Armenian tradition of carpet weaving has been famous for its high quality pieces, which are more like artwork than decor.
8. Taste The Most Delicious Water In The World
Did you know that the water in Armenia is considered one of the safest and most delicious in the world? All over Yerevan small fountains with cool, pure drinking water can be found. In honor of its 2,750th anniversary, the city received 2,750 small fountains. The anniversary has long passed but the fountains remain, and everyone can drink clean cold water free of charge!
9. Feel Real Adrenaline
Due to the mountainous terrain and favorable climate, Armenia is a great place for extreme and soft adventure sports. In recent years, it has become especially popular for paragliding, zip-lining, rock climbing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, skiing/snowboarding, and hot air ballooning. And if adrenaline is not your drug of choice, you can certainly enjoy a glass of wine from the Ararat Plains and watch the “craziness” ensue!
10. Legendary Armenian Hospitality
There is an old Armenian saying, “a guest is a gift from God.” On any occasion of joy or happiness, Armenians are quick to set the table for relatives and friends. Armenians also warmly welcome foreigners and want to do everything to make them feel comfortable in their homeland. Many tourists who have visited other countries, point out that nowhere else have they seen such hospitality as in Armenia.
