Our tours are designed for travelers who are comfortable with daily mobility. Each day offers the opportunity to explore a new town or village, which may involve walking for up to an hour or more. This walking can occur on uneven terrain, including navigating stairs, and often requires getting in and out of vehicles. While the pace is manageable, it is essential that you can walk independently with the group and do not require assistance.

In the afternoon, begin your scenic drive eastward to Akagera National Park, traveling through rolling hills and rural landscapes. Your destination is the southern sector of the park, a region rich in wetlands, lakes, and savannah plains. Upon arrival, check in to your elegant lodge, Mantis Akagera Game Lodge, where the serenity of the wild welcomes you.
Once settled, cap off your day with a private boat cruise on Lake Ihema. Glide along the water’s edge as the golden light of evening dances across the surface. Watch for hippos surfacing near your boat, crocodiles basking on the shores, and an array of birds soaring overhead. Start the day with an early breakfast to fuel up for an exhilarating morning game drive through Akagera National Park. As the first light spills over the savannah, you’ll venture into the heart of the park’s rich and varied landscapes in search of wildlife. Akagera is home to an impressive array of plains game—keep your eyes peeled for herds of impala and topi, and you may be lucky enough to spot the more elusive eland, oribi, or roan antelope. Masai giraffes gracefully graze on acacia trees, while waterbucks and bushbucks dart through the underbrush. You’re also likely to see the bold stripes of Burchell’s zebras crossing the open plains. The northern sector of the park, where much of your drive will take place, offers prime viewing opportunities for large animals like buffalo and elephants roaming free in their natural habitat.
Midday, you’ll pause for a relaxing lunch break before heading back into the park to continue your exploration and wrap up your day of wildlife viewing.

Today begins with an early wake-up and a warm breakfast before setting out for the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, the starting point for one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife experiences—gorilla trekking. After a detailed briefing from expert park rangers about trekking procedures and gorilla etiquette, we begin our journey into the forest at 8:00 am.
The trek takes us through a breathtaking landscape of mountain ecosystems—evergreen and bamboo forests, misty grasslands, and tranquil swamps. The scenery alone is enchanting, but the true highlight is spending a full hour with a family of rare mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Observing these gentle giants up close as they feed, play, groom, and care for their young is a deeply moving and unforgettable experience. Despite their imposing size, gorillas are incredibly peaceful and share a quiet intelligence that leaves a lasting impression.
After returning to the lodge for a well-earned lunch and rest, the afternoon offers a completely different kind of immersion with a visit to the Iby’Iwachu Cultural Village. This vibrant cultural center brings Rwanda’s rich traditions to life, offering visitors the chance to step into a reconstructed village that reflects the country’s pre-colonial heritage. Try your hand at ancient hunting techniques, learn to weave a traditional basket, or join in a spirited community walk to witness daily life in the surrounding villages. Visit a replica of the King’s Palace, interact with local families, and end the experience with energetic traditional music and dance, where you’re warmly invited to join in.

Baggage:
Please check applicable baggage allowances and fees with your airline carrier(s). Overweight luggage and/or additional checked bags can be purchased directly from the airlines.
Passport/Visa:
You must have a valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity from the date of re-entry to your home country. Rwanda does require a visa to enter. The cost is $50, which is not included in the package. Detailed information on how to obtain a visa will be provided.
Health / Vaccinations:
All travelers should be up to date with all routine vaccinations. You may also consider vaccinations for Measles (if not already vaccinated), Rabies, and Hepatitis A and B. Additionally, you may wish to take anti-malarial medication. Consult the Centers for Disease Control website for current recommendations for travel to Rwanda. Check with your physician at least 30 to 60 days before your travel.

What will the weather be like?
March marks the beginning of the rainy season. While outdoor activities might be affected by the wet conditions, it can be a good time for specific experiences like chimpanzee tracking and experiencing the lush landscapes.
The climate remains moderate, with temperatures in the mid to high 70’s and lows in the mid 50’s in places like Kigali. However, temperatures can be cooler in the mountain parks.
What should I wear?
• For regular sight seeing: Pack lightweight clothes and a light jacket or sweater. Cool and casual are the operative words here! Be sure to pack comfortable shoes. Layers are always a good idea; you should bring an umbrella or rain poncho – rain is common at this time of year.
• For gorilla trekking: Long pants an long-sleeved shirts, neutral or dark colors (no bright colors), shoes with good tread, and rain jacket or poncho.
• For safari: Neutral colors (no bright colors), light-weight long-sleeved shirt (sun and insect protection), long pants, comfortable shoes, hat for sun.
Do I need to get any vaccinations?

International airfare is not included in the package. We can assist with reservations for a service fee of $75 per person. (Service fee is waived for WOW! Travel Club alumni.)
Will I need an adapter to plug in my appliances and chargers?
In Rwanda, you’ll need a travel adapter for type C and type J plugs.The standard voltage in Rwanda is 230V, and the frequency is 50Hz. A type C plug has two round pins, while a type J plug has three round pins. Type C adapters are used all over Europe and can work in a type J outlet for low wattage devices (phone chargers, ipad chargers, laptops, etc.), but are not recommended for high-wattage devices (hair dryers, irons, etc.). NOTE: regardless of your adapter type, U.S. hairdryers should NOT be used with an adapter. Hair dryers are available at all hotels and lodges.
Can I use my cell phone in Rwanda?
Cell phone service in Rwanda is generally reliable, with strong 4G LTE coverage in cities like Kigali and along major travel routes. Cell service in mountainous areas may be limited or non-existent, but coverage improves closer to towns. Most U.S. carriers offer international roaming in Rwanda, though coverage and pricing can vary, so it’s best to check with your provider before travel. Many hotels and public spaces in urban areas also offer Wi-Fi for added connectivity.
What is the currency?
Rwanda’s official currency is the Rwandan franc (RWF). As of June 5, 2025, the exchange rate is approximately 1 USD to 1,417.98 RWF. In Kigali, a pint of domestic beer typically costs around 1,500 RWF, which is about $1.06 USD at current exchange rates. Click HERE for the current exchange rate.
Of course, Visa and Mastercard credit cards (many merchants do not accept Amex) are widely accepted. Bank-associated ATMs are available and generally charge a better exchange rate than an exchange office.
What about travel insurance?
